Ruling out the obvious.

Jets/Planes
The common aircraft in and around the Otay Reservoir area have very specific patterns.  Airliners coming into San Diego line up in an east-west approach over Mount San Miguel so that they can turn and land at the airport, which is positioned at a northwesterly angle.  They are like clockwork, and their navigational lights are very apparent and consistent.

There is also a skydiving area at the east end of the reservoir.  They use a couple different prop planes, but to my knowledge, they don’t operate at night.

Helicopters
There’s one very specific trait about helicopters, and that is that they’re frickin’ loud.  They also have very recognizable navigational lights, although they might not always be the same colors or same arrangements.  And of course, if it’s the Ghetto Bird, then there will also be a spotlight.

Ultralight Aircraft
Ultralights have no navigational lights and are not permitted to operate at night.  Unless, of course, they’re smuggling dope in from Mexico.  But even then, I doubt they’d be considerate enough to install some lights.  They also sound like lawnmowers when they fly over.

Drones
I know almost nothing about recreational/consumer “drones,” other than that they seem to be glorified remote-control helicopters.  Speed?  Lights?  Altitude?  Range?  No idea.  But we can put this on the list as a possible candidate.

EDIT: I almost forgot - motor powered parachutes have also been seen around here.  If anyone is dumb enough to fly one of these at night, then maybe they they really should get 'awesome UFO status.'  The problem is that they're incredibly slow.  And noisy.  Likely not an explanation for the things I've seen.  Unless it was falling out of the sky with a green light attached to it.

Intro Post

Hello, hello.

Let me just first say that I've always been pretty open-minded about the prospect of aliens.  And yes, I live pretty close to the Mexican border, but I'm not talking about those kinds of aliens.  I'm talking about the other kind.

The first time I saw some weird shit in the sky was on July 4th, 2013.  We were watching the fireworks going off over the Olympic Training Center; I looked eastward and noticed car headlights along the top of the mountain on the other side of the reservoir (not sure of the name offhand...Otay Mountain, I believe).  Apparently there's a truck trail up there, and I figured that must be a pretty spectacular spot to view the fireworks (I made a mental note to make a trip up there sometime, which I have yet to do).

Anyhow, after viewing the show for several moments, my gaze drifted back towards where I'd seen the headlights atop the mountain.  Instead, I saw two slowly-moving lights - one red, and one green.  They were not planes.  They were not helicopters.  There is a ton of air traffic around this neighborhood (the airliners love to use Mount Miguel as a waypoint), and I am thoroughly familiar with how planes/helicopters look and behave in the dark.

The lights hovered over the reservoir, and moved slowly towards the fireworks.  No one else seemed to notice them; they were all too busy watching the sparkly and shiny explosions.  I pointed at the hovering lights and said, "What the hell are those?"  My friend shrugged them off as helicopters.  As I continued to observe them, I became more and more certain that they absolutely weren't helicopters.  They both gradually drew closer to the fireworks, acting like they were observing the show.  The red one eventually ascended until it disappeared; I lost sight of the green one.

December 8th, 2013 was my second sighting.  This time, I realized the importance of paying more attention to the night sky, rather than to my dogs' asses during our walks.  This time it was incredibly brief - just a green light that I barely caught sight of before it disappeared behind some rooftops.  At first, I thought it might be a meteor, but it wasn't burning, and it wasn't streaking.  Just a rapid green dot.  It made no sound.  Even the dogs, in fact, got excited and began to pull in the direction the light had been.  I didn't bother to investigate; I estimate it had probably been at least half a mile or more away.

Now, I'm aware that small remote-controlled "drones" are becoming more and more popular.  The quadrotors seem like a lot of fun, but I'm unfamiliar with whether or not they actually have navigational lights for nighttime.  I wouldn't be surprised if some people around the neighborhood have them, but the green light I saw during the second sighting seemed way too fast to be some little toy.  Unless it was falling out of the sky, which is possible.

More updates to come if/when I see any more weird shit in the sky.  Feel free to leave feedback with any sightings/experiences!
